Garrett McMasters
"Only through the deepest understanding of our past, can we truly comprehend the future which we build."
Born to a noble family of high ranking within the Atman government, Garrett was said to show exceptional promise as a young student. Early on, he showed such ability when it came to the studious arts, which his family was convinced that he, like his father, would grow to be a great wizard. In fact, it was his ability to absorb and understand even the most complex of ideas at such a young age, which led his family to this conclusion. Unfortunately, as he came of age they learned this not to be the case.

While Garrett's mental capacities insinuated that he would become a powerful magic user, he just did not have his heart in it. It seemed that he cared less about how to use magic and more about understanding its significance.

Though his family gave up on him, he continued to study the arcane arts. Not so much did he seek to cast spells himself, but he became interested in learning enough about magic itself, that he would be able to hold his own in a city ruled by wizards.

His grandfather though disappointed that Garrett did not care to learn to wield the arcane, saw promise in his only grandchild still. It was thus, that on Garrett's 11th birthday, that his grandfather decided to nourish Garrett's thirst for knowledge, taking him to the largest museum in Atma. It was here that Garrett learned his real passion. He discovered that, though reading of the history of things was great, that he wanted to experience them. He wanted to delve into old civilizations, to be the one writing the history books that others discovered new wonders in.

For the next several years, Garrett did all he could to not only learn of ancient civilizations, but to learn to handle and identify their artifacts as well. While his grandfather was over-joyed at his grandson's passion, his mother and father loathed it. They saw their stature within the city failing due to their son's "ignorance" and sought to force his hand. They saw his potential and decided to force him into a wizard's school.

Many words were said between him and his parents, as Garrett learned of this decision, but only being 15 years old, there was little he could do but comply. Thus, Garrett attended the Neibreich School of Wizardry against his will. At first he was angry at his parents, for forcing his hand, but soon became placated with the situation as he discovered one wonderful thing about the college; the library. Here he found a new home.

For two years, Garrett slid by, doing the bare minimum to make the college happy, though never really learning to cast spells. Mainly he just focused on academics, holing himself in the college's library. It was here that he discovered the wonders of the world before Atma. Here he learned of the ancient empire of Ur, the first human civilization. He also learned of the beginning of the Elven civilization and began teaching himself to read and write these languages.

Unfortunately, for Garrett, after two years of showing little promise as a wizard, he was dismissed from the school, forced to go home, head hung in shame. His parents were none too happy, as this reflected even more poorly on their status within the city. After several months of fighting, Garrett finally became sick of his parents and their attitude that he was of secondary importance to them. Thus, he left home.

For several years, he was forced upon the streets, many times with little to eat and nowhere to stay. Having been born into an upper class of society, Garrett was unaccustomed to such living conditions. He learned quickly to survive though and began falling into a rather unsavory crowd of thieves and killers.

Through his new friends he learned many new skills. Not only did he learn some less than savory skills, such as the ability to break into a house and go unnoticed, but he also learned to interact with people on all levels. He learned that, though he was very intelligent, that he loved to be in the thick of it. He loved to be part of the world now, as much as he loved to learn about the worlds that had been. It was through this experience, that he learned, that sometimes, to get thongs done, to find works of historical significance, that sometimes a person has to act outside of the normally accepted channels and delve into the underworld of civilization.

Since this time, Garrett has grown into his own man. He regularly works for the Atman museum of natural history, delivering artifacts of historical significance for small monetary rewards. Much of his past has been left behind him and he has not heard from, nor tried to contact his family in almost ten years. He can be regularly found staying at one of many taverns throughout Atma, though is quite fond of the Dragon’s Head tavern located in the northern central districts of the city.
