[There is little of this book left that deserves the name. Most of the pages have been damaged beyond legibility--mostly, it seems, by fire, but in two or three places it appears as though the pages are stuck together by a black, tarry substance. Only a bare few passages remain legible in the ruin of this book.]
...up camp in the ruins of the human city. We've been warned against this place, but we've yet to see any 'nightmarish horrors' around here. I think everyone's just scared at what those humans cooked up. Obviously, some really terrible stuff happened here, but for our needs, this place serves well: the water's still good, there's some farmland, including lots of dark spaces for mushroom gardens, and innumerable places to hide, not to mention all the goodies the humans are sure to have left in this dead city. There's....
...n't know if the stories were actually true, but some strange things have definitely begun to happen around here. Fiddix says he saw something, two night ago, and now he can't do anything but rock in place. He hasn't even slept. I've tried questioning him about what he saw, but he can't offer much of help beyond that it was 'wrong'. Said it was more wrong than anything he'd ever seen....
...to find some areas of the city that are safe from these thing that keep appearing, but not without losing almost a third of our people. Dunno why those hellspawns decided to attack us, we've never done anything to them. Note to self: scratch that last sentence; they weren't hellspawn, I never heard tell of no demon looked like any of those things. Fiddix was right though: they looked wrong, sure enough. Like, shouldn't have been able even to exist...did manage to come up with some nifty ways of driving them off, though....
...pretty well established again. It's been a lot of work, and I don't think I've slept more than five hours at a stretch, what with keeping the outer defenses up, but I think we've carved out a place for ourselves for real this time....
...claims he heard a sound halfway across the city. Like tapping, he said it was. All echoey, though, and if it hadn't been otherwise perfectly silent, he wouldn't have heard it, he says. I think I may have to go look into this....
