The Lessons Of Vellath, The Shadows Will
A series of thin books bound in black-dyed humanoid leather and written in a strange ink whose darkness hasn't faded--yet shimmers in dim light, for indeed this is the only way in which they can be read. The words and diagrams contained therein do not appear in either bright light or in total darkness. The cover of each book is similar, a single infernal rune scarred into the flesh of the leather before it was cured.

Of Vellath himself much is conjectured but little is known. Neither his species nor origin is recorded, only that he was a source of fear for many, who was active in Sellador sometime around 2725 AA. In 2630 AA the seer Zelun the Mad both wrote of Vellath in his prophecies and depicted his likeness in a painting titled, "The Coming Shadow". The painting shows a vaguely man-shaped billowing mass of black cloaks facing the canvas. The shape is only vaguely suggestive of a humanoid form, but for the yellow eyes that peer out from the blackness. The painting itself was recently moved to the vaults of the mages' college in Allstone to protect the public, as there have been several documented cases of viewers becoming obsessed with the work and driven mad.
