Dwarf
A strong willed subterranean race of master craftsmen.
Also known as High Dwarves.

Dwarves are a short, stocky people who dwell in mountain halls and in caverns beneath the earth. They have a love of all things stone, take joy in mighty deeds of strength and skill, and take pride in the deep familial bonds of their clan.

Dwarves are able tradesmen, often trading worked metal goods for food and other supplies hard to come by beneath the surface of the world.

Contrary to the popular belief of the other races, dwarves do not shy away from magic, rather they embrace it as a tool or a means of empowering their tools. Dwarven magical weapons are some of the finest in the world.

The average dwarven lifespan is 250 to 300 years.

Racial Adjustments

Type: Humanoid

Ability Modifiers: +2 Constitution, -2 Charisma (+2 Wisdom in Pathfinder)

Medium: As Medium creatures, dwarves have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.

Slow and Steady: Dwarves have a base speed of 20 ft., but their speed is never modified by armor or encumbrance.

Darkvision (Ex): Dwarves can see in the dark up to 60 ft.

Stonecunning: This ability grants a dwarf a +2 racial bonus on Search checks (Perception checks in Pathfinder) to notice unusual stonework, such as sliding walls, stonework traps, new construction (even when built to match the old), unsafe stone surfaces, shaky stone ceilings, and the like. Something that isn't stone but that is disguised as stone also counts as unusual stonework. A dwarf who merely comes within 10 feet of unusual stonework can make a Search check as if he were actively searching, and a dwarf can use the Search skill to find stonework traps as a rogue can. A dwarf can also intuit depth, sensing his approximate depth underground as naturally as a human can sense which way is up.

Weapon Familiarity: Dwarves are proficient with battleaxes, heavy picks, and warhammers. Dwarves treat dwarven waraxes and dwarven urgroshes as martial weapons, rather than exotic weapons.

Stability: A dwarf gains a +4 bonus on ability checks (CMD) made to resist being bull rushed or tripped when standing on the ground (but not when climbing, flying, riding, or otherwise not standing firmly on the ground).

Hardy: Dwarves receive a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, spells, and spell-like abilities.

Hatred: Dwarves receive a +1 bonus on attack rolls against humanoid creatures of the orc and goblinoid subtypes due to special training against these hated foes.

Defensive Training: Dwarves receive a +4 dodge bonus to AC against monster of the giant subtype.

Greed: Dwarves receive a +2 racial bonus on Appraise or Craft skill checks that are related to stone or metal.

Automatic Languages: Common and Dwarven. Bonus Languages: Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Terran, Undercommon.
