Causes spikes of obsidian to erupt from the ground in a sudden display of fire and steam.
Conjuration (Creation) [Earth]
Level: Drd 3, Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5ft / 2 levels)
Area: A single 5 ft. square
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Reflex Half
Spell Resistance: No

This spell causes spikes of obsidian to erupt from the ground in a sudden display of fire and steam. Any creature caught in the area must make a reflex save or suffer 1d4 slashing damage per caster level to a maximum of 10d4 and an additional 1 point of fire damage per caster level to a maximum of +10.

Part of the damage dealt by this spell is physical slashing damage, thus damage reduction applies to all but the fire damage. Additionally, the spell only affects creatures that are touching the natural earth in some way, thus this spell would not function on the second floor of a castle, although it would function in the basement, which is close enough to the earth. It does not have effect on flying creatures unless those creatures are within 5 feet of the ground.

The material component of this spell is a burnt shard of obsidian worth at least 5 gp which is hurled at the ground during casting.
