Powder fell all around the Runemaker's feet. The occasional draft would blow the new sand around and up into his eyes. He did not care. He had but one duty. To record the knowledge of all men. He knew it to be an endless job, but he continued anyway.
His chisel scratched away at the granite, for the moment recording the history of the forty-third ruler of the city of Atma. Knowing that his work was satisfactory on this subject, he moved on to the next, laboriously carving in fine detail the beginning of the history of the forty-fourth ruler. Only seventy-three more rulers to go, he thought. Then he would begin on the individual council members. It would take a long time, but someday he would be released from his task.
And all he has is time.
