Adventures In Cobblepot
Brunis, Bandits, and the Death of a friend
Father,

We have been in Cobblepot for a week now, and as we prepare to leave I feel the need to tell you what we found here and the trouble it brought about. When we arrived we travelled through the city to the Charlie Daniels Smokehouse (where I was told Brunis had been seen). Me and Gim asked around the Smokehouse for news of Brunis, and discovered that he came there often (and owed the barkeep and Barmaid money). As it was late, we decided to get some food and drink and relax for the night.
We bought a bottle of a goblin liquor called Cactus Juice; which proved to be more potent than we anticipated. All feeling the effects of the Liquor, we foolishly got into a drinking contest with a large human. I can't remember much of the night after that (and wish I didn't remember the next day). I was told we lost the contest, and, surprisingly, Gim had given the human the bigest challenge (although Grizzlegast informed us that the human had been cheating). After a couple days of rest to recover (and no sign of Brunis at the Smokehouse), we decided to venture out into the city to do some shopping.
We headed to the magic and weapon shops. Upon leaving the weapon shop with my new longsword, I was knocked over by a cloaked figure. As we were getting to our feet I got a look at his face; It was Brunis! He seemed to be in a great hurry, and told me to meet him at a place called Froggies at 9th bell. After he ran off I discovered why he was in such a hurry as three gnomes in grey cloaks approached with drawn daggers. Mistaking me for Brunis they attacked and my friends came out of the store to my aid. Together we quickly overcame our opponents. Rorrin slew one with a masterful swing of his sword, and, in an impressive show of power, Gim managed to paralyze one merely by touching him. After witnessing this, the third fled down the alley.
We took our captive and turned him in to the local authorities. We were told he was a member of the Society of Unanounced Acquisitions (SUA, the local thieves guild). We decided we needed to find a new place to stay, but first my meeting with Brunis was drawing near. We headed to Froggies, a dark smokey tavern with an odd looking frog painted above the bar, and I met with Brunis. I must admit that Brunis' behavior has always been strange to me, but this was beyone even him. He spoke of a treasure that was beyond the value of caves of gold and gems. He said his dreams were leading him to it, and asked for my help in obtaining this treasure (which he couldn't even descibe). Brunis said he would seek me out when he had more news and I decided to wait and listen to what he had to say.
We then headed to the only safe place we could think of to stay for the night, Gim's parent's house. Gim's mother Is rather eccentric, and obviously still sees Gim as a little child (though she can cook a feast not even a dwarf can finish). Gim's father seeemed nice, but he was pretty harsh on Gim. He doesn't understand Gim's dislike of possessions and wealth (though I must admit I don't fully understand it either), and seems to believe Gim is nothing but a trouble maker anymore. We also met another dward named Jas. Jas is a Monk, fighting with neither weapons nor armor, claiming that his mind is his greatest weapon. At first I couldn't understand this, but after he defeated me in a duel I had to conceed that he is capable in combat (even if I don't share his view of weapons).
After breakfast we headed back to the Smokehouse to see if Brunis was there or had left word. I received a letter from Brunis telling of a plot by the SUA to reffit some digging machines for combat. He hinted that we should make our way to the warehouse they were stored in and destroy them before they could be used against the city. Though my companions were doubtful about Brunis' motives, I know he wouldn't lie to me and I was able to convince them to accompany me to the warehouse. We got to the warehouse after dark, and Rorrin went alone to see what was inside. All he could see was four gnomes sitting at a table playing cards. They were, however, all wearing the grey cloaks of the SUA.
With a spell from Grizzlegast we were all able to sneak up to the door, and pry it open. Rorrin then snuck up to the gnomes and struck one with his sap, though it didn't seem to have any effect, and the gnomes didn't react. After a few moments of walking around them we discovered it was just an illusion, and four greatswords descended from a tall stack of boxes. Jas was nearly overcome by the swords, but the magic of Rorrin's sword and the strength of Eoin were enough to defeat them.
We went to the back of the warehouse and found some documents hidden in the floor, and the digging machines in crates. As we were trying to decide what to do about the machines they suddenly came to life. The machines let out an ear piercing shriek, and I found my self stunned with ringing ears. After a moment I recovered and found Gim, Rorrin, and Jas laying on the ground from the attack. I was helping Eoin try to destroy one of the machines, when a panel in the far wall opened and a gnome stepped into view, with something clutched in his hand. I charged across the room and slew the gnome easily, and as the life left his body the machines stopped moving. As we inspected our companions we discovered that while Jas and Gim were merely unconscious, Rorrin had been slain by the blast.
Groehl was obviously distraught over this and immediately took Rorrin to the Gateway to Citadel. I paid the cost of his journey as he took Rorrin to the temple. In the meantime, Eoin and I returned to the warehouse and destroyed the machines. We then returned to Gim's parents, where Gim and Jas were waiting for us. A short time later Groehl appeared at the door with Rorrin standing next to him. I was very glad to see that the priests had been able to bring Rorrin back, I know what it means to have a brother after all. The next morning Groehl went the the city leaders and told them of the plot by the SUA and showed them the documents we had found. Grizzlegast also sent a letter about a spy from the Valley of the Eye he had seen at Froggies.
With the city now in confusion over the fate of the SUA and possible spies from the Valley, we have decided now would be a good time to slip out of the city. I received another note from Brunis telling me he has already left Cobblepot, and hinting that I should head north. I don't know what exactly he's pointing to, but we decided to head to investigate Raven's Lake anyway.
I can't say what we'll find along the road to Raven's lake, but we must be leaving now before the SUA can reorganize. I shall write to you again when I have more new. May the blessings of Shaelan be upon you and Mother.

Lochlan
