I Really Hate Spiders!
a giant spider and the renewing of the sword
Father,

I have arrived in Cobblepot, though I have not yet had time to begin searching for Brunis. All my companions except Thurin decided to join me in this journey; thurin decided to head his own way after finishing his task for the battlemage academy. We aslo decided to stop at Stonebridge and search for Uthrin's wife, Ethera, and put her spirit to rest. Of course we had an alterior motive than just putting her to rest, we wanted the magic of Uthrin's sword back.
So we set off in the summer rain with Grizzlegast driving the wagon. The trip to Stonebridge was quiet (except for grizzlegast's complaining). We met a gnome merchant on the road who, after a long conversation with Gim (the kind only a gnome could enjoy), warned us not to camp in the ruins of Stonebridge, as people had been dissapearing there lately. We decided that since we were looking for the spirit of Ethera we should probably do exactly what the gnome warned us against, and set up our camp in the central plaza of what used to be Stonebridge.
We left Eoin to guard the wagon and Grizzlegast, and began searching the ruins. Rorrin spotted something shiny in the corner of a doorway, but it only turned out to be a spider web; Groehl, however, sensed something evil coming from the building. Rorrin volunteered to sneak in alone and see what he could find. Rorrin returned moments later and reported that the first floor was empty and that the floor had caved into the basement, though he wasn't willing to search the basement alone.
We all then made our way down the slope of the floor into the basement, and started our way down a narrow hallway. Partway down the hall we discovered why people were dissapearing here as six rather large spiders descended from the cieling. We backed out of the hall so we could all attack, and made short work of the spiders. After the fight we continued down the hall, but the real trouble began when we reached the next room.
As Groehl tried to step into the room he became entangled in a very thick web. Seeing an extremely large spider leg moving down in front of Groehl, I said a quick prayer to Shaelan, and grabbed the back of his armor. Shaelan was with me, and I easily pulled Groehl free of the web before the spider could got to him. As I pushed past Rorrin and Groehl to enter the room, I got a very close view (from inside it's fangs) of a creature that will haunt my nightmares. The spider was huge, it's legspan easily fifteen feet. This battle was long, but my aim was true. I landed several blows cutting into the creature, and Kano was able to dash in and bite through it's neck for the killing blow. If not for the healing power of Groehl and Gim, me and Kano would not have survived the fight.
After the spider was dead, we discovered some very old gnome bones under some webbing. As we called her name and Rorrin drew the Uthrin's sword, the spirit of Ethera appeared. She told us that Moriaka, the necromancer, had awakened her and placed the spider there to force her to watch it slay it's victims. He was trying to get information from her, one of three parts of the password to the vault of Nolugar the Reaver, the Litch-King of the Isle Of Ruin. After we assured her Uthrin was at rest, she restored the magic of the sword. I then asked her for the piece of the password she knew, assuring her that if I found the other parts I would destroy the vault. Ethera came close to me, and I felt some knowledge passing to me; though I can't really understand what was told to me. After passing on this knowledge, Ethera was finally able to return to her eternal rest.
Now having what we came here for; we made our way out of the basement, and finished our journey to Cobblepot. I will begin my search in the morning, perhaps Brunis decided to stay here, but we both know that isn't like him, I'm sure I'll discover that he gone. Even if he's not here, perhaps he told someone where he was headed. I can feel the blessing of Shaelan on me again, and my faith is renewed. As I promised when I left home I will never give up in my search for Brunis. May the blessings of Shaelan be upon you and mother.
